The Open Mobile Phone Operating System (OPhone OS), developed by China Mobile for smartphones, will power the HTC-made OPhone A6188 device, the first of many OPhone OS-powered smartphones to hit the Chinese market in the coming months.

Since OPhone OS files as a carrier-made mobile operating system, it integrates a number of carrier-specific features. For example, OPhone will support China Mobile’s mobile TV broadcasting service and MMS out-of-the-box. In addition, the device is offered at an aggressive price point while breaking old rules by bundling the handset and SIM card together.

OPhone handsets went on sale in China on a limited basis at the Feb. 2010. Around twenty models should appear on the market throughout end of 2010. A strong marketing push by China Mobile should help boost the demand and OPhone OS awareness.
